Having a greenhouse can be a life transforming  experience from the ability to grow your own food to having your own tropical paradise in the middle of winter. There are many styles and designs and ways to build them or to buy ready made kits. With the right information you can build your own highly productive greenhouse that can produce food for you year round for very little money.

A solar greenhouse is a great way to capture solar energy to extend your growing season or to even grow food all year long. Some greenhouses can run entirely off of solar energy. This can depend on your location and how cold it gets. In some areas that get cold enough or cold for extended periods of time, additional heating may be needed.

Solar heat can be retained by insulation and thermal mass. Concrete floors will absorb heat from the sun and release it when the sun is not shining. Containers, like barrels, painted black and filled with water can be a way to add thermal mass to your greenhouse. External solar water heaters are another way to add heat to your greenhouse. The heated water can be stored in an insulated water tank, and then circulated through a radiator to release the heat into the greenhouse.

In the warmer times of the year, the problem is often too much heat in a greenhouse. Heat can be reduced by shading with a material like shade cloth and ventilation. Ventilation can be provided by opening up the sides to allow air flow or by fans. A solar powered greenhouse fan is a great way to ventilate a true solar greenhouse. They circulate the hot air out of the greenhouse when the sun is shining, and stop blowing when there is no sun so the heat will stay in.
